Yesterday Veer Ji Jaspreet Singh from
Amsterdam came over to visit. I met him at Khalsa Camp Europe 2021 this
month. When coming to the camp he was very open and shared that this was
his first camp and he didn't know what to really expect. Despite not
being Amritdhari and not ever having woken up Amrit Vela before, Veer Ji
attending every single Amrit Vela session at the camp. The floor was
not the most comfortable to sit on, and made it difficult to sit for
even those with experience of sitting down for long periods of time at
the Gurdwara. Yet, Veer Ji still sat down and tolerate the uncomfortable
pain of the floor! (As they say- "No pain, no gain!")
Three days
after the camp finished, I met Veer Ji again at Den Haag Gurdwara. I
was so happy to know that since camp he has been waking up 3am and
reciting Japji Sahib. Veer Ji cannot read Gurmukhi (yet) and reads
transliteration, however, even surprised those close to him who heard
him recite Jaap Sahib last week during an Amrit Vela Zoom. "Where there
is a will, there is a way".
Veer Ji came to visit yesterday. It
is very tough for someone still with short hair trying to build upon
their Sikhi. Usually those who have not been yet blessed with connecting
with their Guru, think someone else moving closer to their Guru to be a
topic of laugh and jokes. However, little do they know, that connecting
with the Guru and getting closer to Sikhi, is finding true beauty,
happiness and satisfaction in life (which the world is searching for!). I
was very proud of Veer Ji that he has not eaten meat or drank alcohol
since the camp, and he even changed the menu of his wedding to be now
all veg and alcohol-free. This is brave (and wise)!
Veer Ji's story illustrates the power of Saadh Sangat, Gurbani, and Amrit Vela. Sikhi is not just a belief, but an experience and way of life. Believing alone will not change your life, but when one (is courageous enough to let go and) experience Sikhi, you will see the magic of the Guru work in your life. May Satguru Ji continue to bless Veer Ji in his journey ahead in Sikhi. I hope this post encourages others to make a step towards Sikhi, and discover the Singh/Singhni Spirit within.
