Story of Bhenji Kiran Kaur...

I met Bhenji Kiran Kaur Ji and her husband, Bhaji Harjinder Singh Ji, at Khalsa Camp 2014. Since then, they both took Amrit and now enjoying the Guru’s Path. Below is bhenji’s story of her journey to Sikhi:

“My journey of how I came in to Sikhi…

I grew up in a very western family. My dad would go out every weekend, drink alcohol, eat meat etc. Seeing all these things as I was growing up made it normal for us. However, my inner voice was always telling me something is not right, there must be more to life then this.

A few years later I had some addiction problems and really struggled. I didn’t know how to deal with my emotions, so I just spiralled out of control, from one addiction to another. I asked a Gursikh for help and he told me to spend time at the Gurdwara Sahib and Saadh Sangat, which really did help. Shortly after, I met my husband, who was a true diamond. He came to me at the right time. My husband became interested into Sikhi, and kept his Kes and started following Sikhi.

We both attended Khalsa Camp UK in 2014. At the time, I was living a completely different lifestyle and was used to having a different type of Sangat that I actually didn’t want to go. However, my husband really wanted to go. I thought going to the Khalsa Camp, all these religious people will judge me. However, I was so wrong in believing that. All the Gursikhs at Khalsa Camp were so loving and welcoming. They were always smiling and some of them actually related to my story before taking Amrit.

Attending Khalsa Camp UK gave me a different look and hope to life. I ended up changing my Sangat and having loving Gursikhs become part of my family. I was inspired to become a daughter or Guru Gobind Singh Ji by taking Amrit and donning a Dastaar, and was able to say goodbye to my old life.

I'm so glad that I took Amrit, because for me that was when things changed for the better. Amrit was a promise to my Guru that I won't make the mistakes which I had previously done so and live in accordance to his Wisdom. I have since never looked back and feel blessed to be part of the Khalsa family.”

“Take one step towards Guru Ji, and Guru Ji will take a million steps towards you.”

Remembering Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Ji Khalra...

Today marks the martyrdom day of Sikh human rights activist, Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra.

Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra was a bank manager who gave up his job to become a human rights activist and help investigate human rights abuses committed by the Indian State and Police against Sikhs in Punjab.

Bhai Khalra Ji’s work led him to discover and document 25,000 unaccounted dead bodies of Sikhs illegally cremated by the Punjab Police in one cremation ground in Amritsar. His discovery was his death warrant.

Bhai Khalra Ji went to Canada in 1995 to share the tip of the iceberg of human rights violations and genocidal crimes committed against Sikhs of Punjab by the Indian State and Police. On arrival back, he was abducted by the Police whilst washing his car and then tortured to death.

May the courage, determination and fearlessness of Bhai Jaswant Singh Ji Khalra inspire us all to stand up against injustice and oppression, and help bring light of humanity and hope into a world full of darkness of tyranny and corruption.

Awaiting a response from the SGPC

@sgpc_amritsar I would look forward to your reply ji. 🙏🏻

Also Giani Joginder Singh Talwara Ji and Giani Joginder Singh Ji were appointed by the SGPC to research and study the historical ancient Saroops and they made a register of all the typing errors in the modern printed SGPC saroop. Similarly the SGPC published the findings of Bhai Randhir Singh Scholar Ji, Nihung Giani Kundan Singh Ji et al. in a book named Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Paath Soochee. When will @sgpc_amritsar correct the the listed typos found by the above Gurmukhs in the printing of Gurbani by the SGPC printing press, eg “kabeer” is written “kameer” and “kambeer” by mistake?

A Visitor from Holland

Yesterday Veer Ji Jaspreet Singh from Amsterdam came over to visit. I met him at Khalsa Camp Europe 2021 this month. When coming to the camp he was very open and shared that this was his first camp and he didn't know what to really expect. Despite not being Amritdhari and not ever having woken up Amrit Vela before, Veer Ji attending every single Amrit Vela session at the camp. The floor was not the most comfortable to sit on, and made it difficult to sit for even those with experience of sitting down for long periods of time at the Gurdwara. Yet, Veer Ji still sat down and tolerate the uncomfortable pain of the floor! (As they say- "No pain, no gain!")

Three days after the camp finished, I met Veer Ji again at Den Haag Gurdwara. I was so happy to know that since camp he has been waking up 3am and reciting Japji Sahib. Veer Ji cannot read Gurmukhi (yet) and reads transliteration, however, even surprised those close to him who heard him recite Jaap Sahib last week during an Amrit Vela Zoom. "Where there is a will, there is a way".

Veer Ji came to visit yesterday. It is very tough for someone still with short hair trying to build upon their Sikhi. Usually those who have not been yet blessed with connecting with their Guru, think someone else moving closer to their Guru to be a topic of laugh and jokes. However, little do they know, that connecting with the Guru and getting closer to Sikhi, is finding true beauty, happiness and satisfaction in life (which the world is searching for!). I was very proud of Veer Ji that he has not eaten meat or drank alcohol since the camp, and he even changed the menu of his wedding to be now all veg and alcohol-free. This is brave (and wise)!

Veer Ji's story illustrates the power of Saadh Sangat, Gurbani, and Amrit Vela. Sikhi is not just a belief, but an experience and way of life. Believing alone will not change your life, but when one (is courageous enough to let go and) experience Sikhi, you will see the magic of the Guru work in your life. May Satguru Ji continue to bless Veer Ji in his journey ahead in Sikhi. I hope this post encourages others to make a step towards Sikhi, and discover the Singh/Singhni Spirit within.

Salute to Afghan Sikh brothers’ Sikhi Spirit

I received a message from someone who has direct involvement with the Sikh Afghans still in Afghanistan.

There are 250 individuals left, who all reached Kabul this Sunday morning.

Of the 250 Sikhs, 10 Sikhs have volunteered to remain behind to look after the Gurdwaras (Sikh holy shrines). They do so with the knowledge that their lives will/could be in danger and they have stated they accept any responsibility of their actions.

I heard a recording from Bhai Jasbir Singh Ji from Jalabad. He informs the Sangat that all the Sangat of Jalabad have left for Kabul to seek safety at Gurdwara Karta Parvaar. However, Bhai Jasbir Singh Ji and his family (wife and children) and another Gursikh have decided to stay back in Jalabad. He says he has no desire to migrate abroad and make a new life at the expense of abandoning the historical Gurdwara of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Jalabad. He says, if they leave the Gurdwara will either be taken over by Muslims or destroyed. They have transported all Guru Granth Sahib Ji’s saroops to Kabul. They just have 2 senchis (volume parts) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji which they do Parkaash and Paath from. Bhai Jasbir Singh Ji says he knows that he and his family may be killed by the Taliban (or splinter groups), however they are willing to sacrifice themselves for the House of Guru Nanak. Well wisher Muslim families have helped to guard the other Sikh shrines in Jalabad from attacks or encroachment.

This brought tears to my eyes. Salute to him and all the Gursikh brothers and sisters who have the choice of either (1) leaving Afghanistan and abandoning their historical holy shrines and homes, (2) cutting their hair and embracing Islam, or (3) staying to look after the Gurdwaras with death looming forever above them.

May the Sikhi Spirit of our Afghan Sikh brothers and sisters motivate those brothers and sisters from Sikh families who still have cut Kes (hair), not yet began reading Gurbani as part of their daily life, or wearing a Dastaar- to claim back and look after their Sikhi in solidarity and respect of the Afghan Sikhs.

Wearing 'Bana' on the train...

I was on the train today, on the way airport. The train was busy and I needed a seat. I had luggage with me and I decided to go through First Class to go to see if the train cabin after that was free.

When I got to the end, there was a lady standing who was the cleaner. She said “Where are you going?” I said that I am going to the the next compartment. She said “Its blocked off from here, there is nothing beyond.” I said “Okay, I will stand in this area (where the doors are situated).” The cleaner said “I would need to ask if you can even stand in this area as it is the doorway to first class.”

I was dressed in blue Bana (religious attire), khanda on dastaar, and my kirpan and hazooria visible. The conductor lady looked at me with respect and politely came and said “This is First class Sir”. I said “I couldn’t find a seat in the other compartment.” She said “Let me see.” She began walking me through First Class towards the end. Suddenly she stopped and said “Let me see your ticket.” I showed that I had a standard ticket. She smiled and said “I am sure we can arrange something for you. Please come and sit in First Class, feel comfortable and relax.”

Amazing, how wearing Bana has so much power that it radiates grace and positivity. A lot of people get insecure of wearing Gurmukhi Bana (religious dress) when travelling and think you have to wear Western clothes otherwise you get trouble. Today, like many incidents experienced, Guru Ji has shown that Bana worn with sincerity and Guru’s love opens doors to blessings.

Inspiration from Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Ji...

Bhai Mani Singh Ji, an 18th century Sikh saint-scholar-leader, born in 1644, was blessed to have Darshan (audience) of four of the Great Sikh Gurus (Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji to Guru Gobind Singh Ji).

He was further blessed with Seva (selfless service) of scribing Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as Guru Gobind Singh Ji dictated it from beginning to end over 9 months, and 9 days. So, Guru Ji ‘spoke’, Bhai Mani Singh Ji ‘listened’, and then he ‘scribed’. However, he did not only scribe the Guru’s immortalising Words on paper, but on his heart. Each Bachan (Word) of the Guru throughout his life, he listened and then wrote down in his heart and mind. This would later become evident at the end of his life.

In 1734, the age of 90 years old, Bhai Mani Singh Ji was arrested by Lakhpat Rai and handed over to the Mughal Governor of Punjab, Zakhriya Khan. He was given a choice - firstly, accept intimidation and slavery by paying a heavy fine without justification. Secondly, give up his faith and embrace the religion of the oppressor. Lastly, accept a torturous death by being cut piece by piece.

In simpler words- either accept slavery, have your Sikhi torn up into pieces, or have your body torn up into pieces. Bhai Mani Singh Ji chose to have his body torn up, rather than have his Sikhi and his principles torn up into pieces and hacked to destruction.

The Guru’s Immortalising Words scribed in his conscience, his heart, and mind, gave him the strength to endure the cruel pain and torture of having each joint hacked off but not to flinch or sigh.

Listen hard, and you will hear Bhai Mani Singh Ji’s immortal spirit speaking through the pages of history- “Dear son and daughter, when given a choice to either have my body hacked to pieces or my Sikhi hacked to pieces… I chose to save my Sikhi and have my body hacked… the Sikhi that I saved, have you kept it safe or have you done the job of the oppressors and cut up Sikhi* into pieces?”

*Note: What is Sikhi? Our unshorn hair (Kes), our Dastaar (turban), our Amrit Vela (rising up in the last watch of the night), Naam Simran (meditation), our Nitnem (daily prayers), our Kakkaars (articles of faith), and our high moral character.

Mundavani...
